How one simple thing can affect your small business owner insurance….

May 2, 2012 By James Leave a Comment

If you’re struggling to get the best small business owner insurance deal – here’s a bit of strange advice…..have you considered changing your name?

small business owner insuranceResearch carried out by the UK’s largest business insurance provider looked into correlations that might exist between places, people and professions in terms of their insurance claims behaviour.

The results, based on the claims data of almost a quarter of a million businesses, show that certain small business owner names have less luck than others, with Leo and Brenda being labelled the UK’s ‘most careless’ business owners.   Last year 7.7 per cent of owners with the name Leo claimed on their small business owner insurance last year – nearly five times the national average of 1.6 per cent. And Brenda was a close second with 6.3 per cent.

Other unfortunate names to have if you take out small business owner insurance include  Perry, Giuseppe and Desmond, while for women, if you have the June, Gaynor, Naomi and Cheryl you are far more likely to have a claim on your small business owner insurance.

Overall, female are shown to be the most careful business owners – only comprising 20 per cent of the top ten names most likely to make a claim on their small business owner insurance.

So what is a safe name for small business owner insurance?

The most careful name in the country is Norman, followed closely by Henry as the least likely to make a claim out of all the UK entrepreneurs studied. The most careful female business owner was Frances with Hilary the second safest bet.

How your trade affects your small business owner insurance

The research also looked at the trades least likely to claim on their policy.  The mobile phone retail industry topped the charts as the most likely business to claim on their small business owner insurance, with 11.8 per cent of phone shops claiming in the last year, compared to an average of 1.6 per cent across other trades. Other careless trades in the top ten include sweet shops, ice cream parlours and laundrettes.  On the flip side, the safest profession proved to be masseurs, receiving the least claims per business owner out of all the trades covered. Florist and jewellers also had very low claims incidents.   So if you need some tips on how to keep the claims down on your business premises insurance or how to stop other people claims against your liability insurance for small business, perhaps you need to talk to your local masseur or florist!

Better still – talk to a small business owner insurance broker. Whether you are Leo, Norman, a mobile phone shop or a masseur….if you are looking for the best small business owner insurance cover, give us a call on 01489 579808 or send us an email at Greenfield Insurance and let us find the best solution tailored for your business.
