The Top 10 Tips to Compare House Insurance

February 7, 2011 By Stephen Leave a Comment

As professional Insurance Brokers, we at Greenfield Insurance Services are constantly urging people to compare house insurance before making a buying decision. It is important to note that every house insurance policy is different and it is essential that when buying a policy you make sure that the policy meets your needs and requirements. So, what are our top tips when you come to compare house insurance?

Compare House Insurance

compare house insurance

  1. Firstly know what you want covered. For example do you have jewellery; watches etc. that you take away from your home or have you any antiques, silver or collections that you have specifically covered.
  2. Do you require the benefits of having an “Accidental Damage” Policy?
  3. Give some thought to the cost of replacing EVERYTHING in your home at today’s current prices.
  4. Remember that if you are using a House Insurance Comparison web site you are effectively being your own Insurance Broker and will need to interpret the questions that you are required on your own to ensure that you are requesting the cover you actually want. You will not get the help and advice provided by an Independent Insurance Broker.
  5. Policies vary in the cover and extensions that they provide so do not just select the cheapest. Check if the benefits provided by an alternative Insurer could be useful to you.
  6. Policy excesses are increasing throughout the Insurance market so check carefully ALL of the excesses applicable to the Policies that you are considering.
  7. When we really need the right Insurer and Insurance Policy is when a claim occurs so it is a good idea to find out what the claims service is like with the Insurers that you are considering. Ask your Insurance Broker for his opinion of the Policies under consideration. This is not a facility available to you when you use a web site to compare house Insurance.
  8. If you are tempted to choose a Policy purely on price at Greenfield Insurance Services we recommend that you give full consideration to the “after sales” service that you will receive. If you arrange your Insurance through an Independent Insurance Broker you will usually deal with one person for all matters relating to your policy so that you feel comfortable with all the dealings you have with your Insurance provider.
  9. If you feel that your circumstances will change during the course of the policy such as intending to undertake building work or you are contemplating a large purchase such as an expensive watch or piece of jewellery ask the intended Insurer how they would deal with the possible changes. If they are unable to accommodate you, it is best to know at an early stage so that you can arrange cover with an Insurer that will.
  10. You should always request a full quotation in writing, together with a summary of Policy cover. If requested, Insurers will also quite readily supply a copy of the full policy wording.

In this busy world, time is our enemy and it is so very easy to pay limited attention to domestic arrangements such as House Insurance but we would ask you to consider the fact that your House and its contents represent a massive investment and have taken a lifetime to create and they could be so easily lost if you do not take time to arrange the Insurance cover that you need and require to protect them full.

So, the message from Greenfield Insurance Services is Compare House Insurance but take time to do it. Look at the cover provided by each Insurer (not just the sum insured) and be comfortable in your own mind that if you have specific needs of your Insurance that the chosen policy meets those needs to your satisfaction.

If in doubt, give us a call on Tel: 01489 579808 and speak with Lita Buckley or Christina Foulds or email: mail@greenfieldinsurance.co.uk and we will be pleased to help.
