How do I arrange Gadget Insurance?

February 2, 2011 By James Leave a Comment

Gadget Insurance

In today’s fast moving and technology driven world Gadget Insurance is becoming increasingly important as our possessions and assets become increasingly portable.

Gadget Insurance can protect a wide range of products including:

iPhones, iPads, Blackberrys, laptops, Netbooks, Kindles, cameras, GPS watches and other hand held devices.

However, how do you know which gadget insurance is best for you.

When considering the implications of arranging the right Gadget Insurance, there are two options:

  1. Arrange a separate gadget insurance policy for each item
  2. Arrange Gadget Insurance under a home contents insurance

Separate Gadget Insurance policies can have a number of exclusions included, with terms written into their policies like “reasonable precautions” “unattended theft exclusion” “excluding water damage”.

Most importantly cover is arranged on a 2nd hand settlement value basis with depreciation for wear and tear plus the age of the item being taken into account.

You will also need to arrange separate Gadget Insurance for each item which can be costly if you own a variety of valuable gadgets.

Our Recommendation for Gadget Insurance….Arrange cover under Home Contents Insurance!

Under home contents insurance, you can extend the basic package to include personal belongings cover which will provide cover for all your gadgets on a worldwide basis and include such benefits as accidental damage, loss and theft.

Most insurers will provide an automatic cover for all gadgets within and away from home with a single value per item of either £1,000 or £1,500. They will also include non-gadget items away from home including watches, sports equipment, clothing and other hand held items such as handbags.

The benefits of arranging gadget insurance under home contents insurance are:

  1. Wider cover than under a separate Gadget Insurance policy
  2. Less “small print exclusions” than a separate gadget insurance policy
  3. One policy for all your gadgets
  4. One excess in the event that more than one gadget is stolen at the same time
  5. Cover arranged on a new for old basis
  6. To extend a home contents policy to include gadget insurance can cost as little as £15 per year

Make sure you get the correct level of cover for your contents and gadget insurance

It very easy to underestimate the amount of gadgets and valuables you own.  We recommend working out the value of your contents with our simple to use valuation guide.  Just print it off and walk around your house filling it in.
