Six Insurance Tips for Your Business Premises over the Festive Period

December 6, 2012 By James Leave a Comment

business premises insuranceAfter the hectic build up to Christmas, you may be one of the lucky businesses who are able to shut up the office for longer than usual over the festive period.  But before you dash off for a welcome break, here are 6 simple steps to follow to ensure you are not met with any unwelcome surprises when you return in the New Year.

  1. Heating –If you have fixed heating in place, if possible keep this at a constant temperature of 15 degrees. With cold and freezing temperatures likely, avoid frozen and burst pipes by not turning it off completely.
  2. Christmas decorations – Make sure loose decorations are removed, not only can they be a fire hazard, but they can cause false intruder alarm alerts when detected by movement sensors.
  3. Electrical appliances – Instead of leaving appliances and computers/screens on standby, make sure all those that can be turned off, are turned off. Not only will this reduce the risk of electrical faults, fire and equipment breakdown, it will help keep your energy bills down.
  4. Security – Make sure all windows and doors are fully secure and all attractive theft items such as laptops and hand tools are stored away from sight. Check your alarms are all working properly and emergency numbers or alarm company contacts are all up to date.
  5. Waste – Storage of waste in external areas can pose a significant arson risk. Where possible, ensure minimal waste is stored in external areas and ensure it is at least 5 metres from the building.
  6. Business Premises Insurance – Many businesses will see increased production and sales over the Christmas period. If you are storing more materials or stock than usual, make sure your sums insured are correct and you advise your broker or insurer accordingly to prevent inadequate sums insured.

If you have any questions about your business premises insurance or need to get an up to date quote, please call our commercial team now on 01489 579808 or contact us via our web form.

Wishing you all the best over the festive period.
